Thinking About Freedom

  • Liberty is the only thing you cannot have unless you are willing to give it to others. William Allen White
  • I disapprove of what you say, bit I will defend to the death your right to say it. Voltaire (attributed)
  • Any nation that thinks more of its ease and comfort than its freedom will soon lose its freedom; and the ironical thing about it is that it will lose its ease and comfort too. W. Somerset Maugham

Ask most people in what we consider free societies whether they believe in personal freedom and they will respond positively. Some even wax eloquent about loving freedom. But freedom is not a word that means much practically without a context.

Freedom in our lives is usually freedom to and freedom from. We love the freedom to think, believe, say, and do. We want freedom from restriction, pain, etc. This is a good time to consider what freedoms we value and are willing or unwilling to share with others. What freedoms or rights are we born with? Do we believe the state, the experts, or the majority have the right to to take them away?

Remember freedoms are to be society-wide. If not, are we imitating the the models of Kingship, aristocratic rule, nazism, fascism, or communism?  Is that really the direction a free people should be heading?

Please think about freedom. be sure of what you believe and why you believe it. I hope you all have a great week. Enjoy your freedoms.

anti-hate

As the haters on the left and right gear up for another try at increasing their power, let us run a campaign of our own…an anti-hate campaign.

People can be Great.

Animals can be fun.

AND scenery can be gorgeous.

Have a great week and appreciate the beauty and riches around you.

I Wish I’d said That.

  • Truth sounds like hate to those who hate truth. Paul Daugherty
  • We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. Native American Proverb

Just to consider these quotes helps us to a greater awareness.

Now to revisit a little humor.

  • The early gets the worm. So remember, you’d be an idiot to be an early worm.
  • One of the quickest ways to meet new people is to pick up the wrong golf ball.
  • To err is human but to really screw up requires a computer.

  • Never knock on death’s door. Just ring the bell and run away. He hates that.

Remember our friends…KO Kat, Incognito, and Kung Fu Kitty

   Have a great week.

WOW!

Just a reminder this week that there are so many things to do and see now that summer is near. There are fairs, festivals, ball games, lakes to see, food to eat, people to watch. There is so much to see and to learn.

This post is an encouragement for you to find something special to do and share it with friends and family. When you look back you’ll remember special experiences, special people.

It’s very easy to be inactive. My TV and electronic toys make me think I’m doing something when I’m not doing much. Ten years from now what I watched on TV or YouTube will probably be long forgotten. But I still remembers great concerts and festivals from decades ago.

Pick some new things. Build some new memories. You may be amazed. You may end up saying WOW!

Have a Great Week! Create a WOW!

A Note to My Friends

This weeks post will be short due to circumstances with which I will not bore you. This just a note to remember how rich we are in people, freedoms, and the beauty of the world we appreciate through our senses. We are rich in foods and music. we are rich in positive people working to improve our world. There are the ones who do it professionally and those who go beyond their professions to help to serve to change. Remember the doctors and nurses, the teachers and tutors, those in the service and the veterans. Appreciate your spouse, your family, your friends…in them lay many of the riches of your life. Appreciate. You are rich.

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK!

So Bad?

This week here in the U.S. we’ve had another school shooting. As we investigate the causes and seek solutions we need to realize that as challenging as things are, they are not the worst they have ever been. We often judge the world from our own life experiences. We have divisions politically but unlike in the past congressmen are not dueling with each other. We have divisions regarding race relations but the vast majority of Americans are solidly opposed to slavery, segregation, and lynching. We often need historical perspective while we deal with the challenges of today. Find someone with some gray in their hair. Ask if this is as bad as it’s ever been.

I am not excusing the evil of today. But if we put it in perspective, we realize that the troubles of today can be dealt with and overcome like troubles of the past have been. Social improvement is a constant work in progress. There is no “easy” button. Good folks must continue to resist the bad.

On a Lighter Note

  • Be yourself. Everyone else is taken. Oscar Wilde
  • We all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid. Benjamin Franklin
  • Women like silent men. They think they’re listening. Marcel Achard
  • I have noticed that nothing I have never said ever did me any harm. Calvin Coolidge
  • It’s better to keep one’s mouth shut and be thought a fool than open it and remove all doubt. Abraham Lincoln

And what are you looking At?

Really Mom, I’m not up to anything.

While we deal with the challenges let’s never forget the good. Have a great week.

Entertainment

We all liked to be entertained. In a a large city we are bombarded with opportunities to be entertained. Ads electronically and otherwise are all  around us. But in smaller or rural communities the opportunities for entertainment are less obvious. For this article I am not referring to watching videos online or gaming. I am referring to other opportunities.

Have you thought of…

Picking a theme or interest then using the internet to find things to do, places to see that match your interest? How about a BBQ road trip around your town, state, or country? If you are interested in Native American history art, how about trips to the tribal museums, pow wows, Native American gift shops, etc? Do you love certain types of music? There are concerts, festivals…not to mention online sources for videos of live concerts. Do you and your friends love a variety of ethnic food? Ethnic theme parties are great. With a little research even the most rural areas have a lot to offer. I was raised in rural Iowa and often complained about “nothing happening” But it really wasn’t true. There were county fairs, a state fair, music festivals,a sweetcorn festival, a watermelon festival, a strawberry festival, Crooked Creek Days, Steamboat Days, Old Threshers Reunion and more. With the internet it is easier to find events that appeal to you. Use a little creativity. Get family or friends involved. Explore. Have fun. Have a hand in creating your own entertainment experience.

Chuckles

  • My grand dad has the heart of a lion and a lifetime ban from the zoo.
  • Promises are a bit like babies, fun to make and hard to deliver.
  • Drugs are never the answer. Unless the clue is: “narcotics, five letters”.
  • If exercise is so good for you, why do athletes retire by age thirty-five?
  • A smart husband buys his wife fine china so she won’t trust him to wash it.

Have a Great week!

This post will be unusual. This last week has been an incredibly hard one for me. So rather than being discouraging, I am taking a break from some negative realities a and laugh a little.

  • I make stained glass contact lenses for people who want to sleep in church. London Lee

  • In all matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane. Mark Twain
