Today I hope you hear my heart through my words. I am very concerned about people who see our country, our society through a narrow lens. Some of them say it’s not good. Some say it’s all evil. There are so many variations on the theme! I am most concerned about those who see our society only through negative lenses: those that see their own culture as evil and their future as hopeless. Unfortunately, too many have been told only the negative parts about our nation, our world. They see reality through that narrow lens.
Everyone who has put together an old fashioned puzzle knows you can not judge the whole puzzle’s picture by one piece. So too if you judge American history only through racist history, for example, and don’t see the wider panorama of the American experiences you might conclude that America is racist. Some folks do. Because they don’t see the wider picture they don’t know about the millions of Americans who weren’t and aren’t racist. They do not know the cooperative struggle that keeps America moving more and more towards its promise of freedom and justice for all. They cannot see that America has not given up on that dream. Because of their narrow lens they think one piece of the puzzle defines the whole picture.
Because they cannot see the good as well as the bad they are angry and often hopeless. The world they see lacks the love, the faith, the hope, the promise that informs the world view of those who would build and not destroy.
Those who would love, not hate: those who would build not destroy: They are our future. There is challenge here and in it is opportunity. Look at the bigger picture and look for ways to put together an even better one. Lack of faith, lack of love, hate, and division will NEVER build a better…a more beautiful world.
BEWARE OF THE NARROW LENS.
Good word, Tim.
