So Bad?

This week here in the U.S. we’ve had another school shooting. As we investigate the causes and seek solutions we need to realize that as challenging as things are, they are not the worst they have ever been. We often judge the world from our own life experiences. We have divisions politically but unlike in the past congressmen are not dueling with each other. We have divisions regarding race relations but the vast majority of Americans are solidly opposed to slavery, segregation, and lynching. We often need historical perspective while we deal with the challenges of today. Find someone with some gray in their hair. Ask if this is as bad as it’s ever been.

I am not excusing the evil of today. But if we put it in perspective, we realize that the troubles of today can be dealt with and overcome like troubles of the past have been. Social improvement is a constant work in progress. There is no “easy” button. Good folks must continue to resist the bad.

  • We all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid. Benjamin Franklin
  • Women like silent men. They think they’re listening. Marcel Achard
  • I have noticed that nothing I have never said ever did me any harm. Calvin Coolidge
  • It’s better to keep one’s mouth shut and be thought a fool than open it and remove all doubt. Abraham Lincoln
